British Sausage Company buys Hamlet Pork herd, shifts operations to Margaret River

Perth sausage king Mick Ferrero has snagged Hamlet Pork as part of a buying spree to build a farm-to-fork operation. The British Sausage Company’s acquisition of Hamlet Pork, a producer of high-quality Berkshire pigs from Luke and Catherine Hamson, comes after its $5.75m purchase of the Margaret River Venison farm in July. The Hamsons started Hamlet Pork after being inspired by the local Italian culture in Waroona and difficulty sourcing quality pork locally. The sale, rumoured to be worth up to $1m, does not include the Waroona property where the Berkshire pigs were originally farmed. Instead, the Berkshire herd has gone to the 120ha Margaret River Venison farm on Caves Road at Cowaramup, managed by Chad Mitchelmore. The British Sausage Company is part of Australian British Food Holdings, which also owns Peppercorn Food Co and British Ham & Bacon Co. Mr Mitchelmore said the company intended to make the Margaret River farm shop a premier tourist destination in the region by selling locally grown farm meats and produce. Mr Ferrero, a third-generation butcher and British migrant, started making traditional English sausages in the early 1990s after fellow expats said they couldn’t buy a decent pork sausage as made in Britain.
