Former NSW premier Gladys Berejiklian has thrown her support behind her would-be successor, making a surprise appearance in a promotional video ahead of the Willoughby by-election.

Ms Berejiklian stepped down from politics last year after she was investigated by the Independent Commission Against Corruption for allegations of breaching public trust and encouraging corrupt behaviour by her former lover, Daryl Maguire.

Following her resignation, she was touted as a potential federal candidate, but she quickly ruled that out, saying she was looking forward to a career in the private sector and a “much less public life”.

Now, having served as the member for Willoughby from 2003 to 2021, Ms Berejiklian has appeared in a promotional video for Tim James who won preselection earlier this month.

The Liberal Party is hopeful Mr James will be able to maintain the seat for the party at the February 12 by-election.

Ms Berejiklian said if Mr James won, he would do a “great job” in representing the entire community.

“It’s been an amazing experience representing the electorate of Willoughby for nearly 19 years,” she said.

“I love this community, and know that Tim James, the new Liberal candidate for the seat of Willoughby loves it just as much and will do a great job in representing all of us in moving forward together.”

Mr James, who hails from the right faction as opposed to Ms Berejiklian’s left, told News Corp last week that he had “big shoes to fill”.

“Gladys was an outstanding local member and in a lot of ways my focus is to continue her great work by protecting and enhancing the many things that make Willoughby such a great place,” Mr James said.

“I’m aware I have big shoes to fill.”

Willoughby is one of four electorates that will head to the polls on February 12 for a by-election ahead of next year’s state election.
