The MTV Video Music Awards kicked off with controversy after notorious UFC fighter Connor McGregor and Megan Fox’s latest squeeze Machine Gun Kelly got into a red carpet dust up.

TMZ reports McGregor wanted to get a photo with MGK but was pushed away by the rapper’s security, prompting him to throw a drink — and a left hook — at the star.

Witnesses say the two celebrities’ security teams then jumped in to stop the chaos and usher Fox — who was being shielded by Kelly — away.

Fox, who wore a jaw-dropping see through dress, looked visibly shaken by the incident but did not appear to be harmed.

Australian pop star Troye Sivan witnessed the fight.

“I just saw a fight on the red carpet, I saw some crazy s**t,” he told reporters.

Held at Barclays Center in New York City, the old and the new were on show at the VMAs — with a few surprise appearances from some of the music industry’s finest.

The ceremony, which was able to have a live audience this year, opened with a special video by pop legend Madonna who paid homage to the network's 40th anniversary.

The 63-year-old singer whipped the crowd into a frenzy after walking onto the stage in a trench coat, before throwing it off to reveal a leather outfit.

“And they said we wouldn’t last but we are here mother***ers,” Madonna said into the microphone.

The singer then exited the stage as Justin Bieber walked on with Australian rapper Kid Laroi to perform their smash hit Stay.

The night was filled with show-stopping performances from newcomers — as well as music veterans such as Foo Fighters, Alicia Keys, and Busta Rhymes.

And it wouldn’t be an award show without a political statement from a star.

Girls Just Wanna Have Fun singer Cyndi Lauper used her role as a presenter to comment on the United State’s current political landscape.

“Yeah, girls wanna have fun. But we also want to have funds. Equal pay. Control over our bodies! You know, fundamental rights,” Lauper said.
