A man has denied causing the death of disgraced Labor MP Barry Urban outside his work in Perth’s southeast.

Jerry Aniseto Masipau, 26, pleaded not guilty to manslaughter when he faced Stirling Gardens Magistrates Court on Wednesday.

Urban died about two months after he was allegedly punched and hit his head on the ground outside Tyre Brigade in Kelmscott in November 2024.

Mr Masipau also pleaded not guilty to one count of burglary while armed with a dangerous weapon at the auto store.

The accused had his bail extended and the matter was moved to the WA Supreme Court where it will be heard for the first time on May 18.

Mr Masipau also faces assault, reckless driving and no authority to drive charges after he allegedly fled the scene.

Those matters will be heard in Perth Magistrates Court on July 13.

Urban was an MP in the Mark McGowan Labor government, but resigned and was later jailed after he was exposed for wearing fake service medals and lying about his qualifications.

Urban falsely claimed he was awarded war medals for investigating war crimes and lied to a parliamentary committee about his service record.

Urban also forged university degrees while applying to join the state’s police force.

He was then charged with 12 offences by WA Police and received a three-year jail sentence.
