Ford has unveiled the Ranger FX4 Max variant in Australia, which promises much of the thrills of the Ranger Raptor without many of the compromises — all for a lower price.

The FX4 Max $65,940 plus on-roads, making it a hefty $11,250 less than the Raptor flagship.

The FX4 Max shares the Raptor’s 157kW/500Nm 2.0-litre turbo diesel engine/10-speed automatic combination — the Ranger’s famed 3.2-litre five-cylinder diesel isn’t an option — plus the same off-road upgrades such as Fox shock absorbers, 32-inch all-terrain tyres and all-weather interior, but improved payload and tow ratings.

But due its coil-sprung rear suspension, the Raptor is limited to towing 2500kg and a 748kg payload, whereas the FX4 Max’s leaf set up means it can take 981kg and tow 3500kg.

It will also mimic the Raptor on the road, sharing the same ‘F.O.R.D.’ lettered front mesh grille, a full-length tubular sports bar and body-mounted metal ‘hoop’ side steps.

The changes improve its off-road credentials compared to the Ranger XLT, with better approach and departure angles (31 and 23 degrees, each a 2-degree improvement) and ground clearance up from 237mm to 256mm.

Inside, the FX4 Max is the first Ranger to score upfitter auxiliary switches as found on Ford pick-ups around the world, including the F-Series.

Sitting above the 8.0-inch touchscreen, the six switches allow for easy use of accessories and equipment such as light-bars, winches and spotlights.

The FX4 MAX features a specific 250A alternator to support power supply to multiple accessories and reduce reliance on the vehicle’s battery.

Other features include built-in satellite-navigation and Apple CarPlay/Android Auto.

Options include an $800 Tech Pack which adds adaptive cruise control and semi-auto active park assist, and $650 for premium paint.

An FX4 Max decal set on the bonnet, doors, box sides and tailgate adds $750.

The new addition is set to arrive late this year. Though currently set for a limited production run, it could become a permanent model should it prove popular.
