Revamp rises to occasion for modern families

“We fell in love with the home straight away because of its feeling of height and nature with views over parks, trees and to the hills,” current owner and interior designer Barbara Matzneller said, adding that the location had also been a major drawcard.

“There is a park across the road and it is only a short walk to Empire Village’s shops and restaurants, as well as being within walking distance of the beach.

“It is a very versatile home as it will fulfil the needs of a large modern family, but since the living is all on one level, it really is suitable for everyone.”

Thoughtfully extended earlier in its lifetime, the dwelling’s recent revamp breathed new life into the interiors and added another extension to the back of the layout, comprising a master suite and two bathrooms.

Ms Matzneller said the renovations adhered to the dwelling’s mid-century modern beach house style while honouring its history.

“We included light oak floors and travertine tiles, and we also celebrated the beautiful original features and restored them to their former glory – for example, the parquet floor, ornate ceilings and detailed plaster cornices – while keeping the home bright and airy,” she said.

This design approach is evident throughout the residence, preserving its legacy while infusing it with contemporary flair.

Classy comfort begins upon entry, where the expansive front lounge displays ornate ceilings, a chandelier and a balcony taking in park vistas.

The sense of space continues in the rear open-plan family zone, where the feeling of being embraced by nature makes you forget you even have neighbours, according to Ms Matzneller.

“Our favourite room is the oversized kitchen, living and dining room at the back of the house, which has full-length windows overlooking the hills,” she said.

“We moved the kitchen and dining area from one side of the zone to the other, so we could maximise the views.

“The kitchen has vast storage, a scullery and a separate walk-in pantry, ensuring it can cater to the needs of a big family.”

Ms Matzneller said the enormous glass panels in the living room pulled in so much sunlight and natural beauty that the backyard itself felt like an effortless continuation of the house.

“It’s a peaceful green oasis with enough space and grass for the children to play on or to add a pool if desired,” she said.

“There is also a lovely herb garden next to the kitchen.”

According to Ms Matzneller, the palatial bedrooms continue the connection to the surrounding landscape, with all enjoying views over the park or hills.

“The master suite has access to the garden, as well as a substantial walk-in robe,” she said.

“The highlight is the freestanding bath sitting on river stones, which feels like part of nature.”

This effect is enhanced by a wall of glass behind the bathtub connecting the ensuite with the verdant sights.

Three secondary bedrooms with built-in robes – one of which boasts a new ensuite – provide peaceful accommodation for family members. Residents can prepare for the day or wind down for the evening in the elegant shared bathroom nearby comprising dual basins, a bathtub against a turquoise feature wall, a shower and a chandelier.

Separated from the hustle and bustle, a bedroom with a built-in robe at the front of the residence is perfect for overnight guests and multi-generational living.
