Albany, Denmark and Mt Barker are all finalists in this year’s WA Tidy Towns Sustainable Communities awards, with Albany also in the running for the State gong.

The list of 43 finalists was announced on Thursday, with the winners to be announced at the end of November.

The WA awards are split into 10 categories and communities also become eligible for the overall State award if they enter in at least six of the 10 categories.

Albany is shortlisted in three categories this year and all three nominations were from local community group Keep Albany Beautiful.

Spencer Park community centre The Commons earned Albany a place on the finalists’ list in the community action and wellbeing category, while the Containers for Change program at Albany Secondary Education Support Centre put the city on the list for the community containers for change award.

The city is also a finalist in the environmental education category for Keep Albany Beautiful’s annual free community event Green Fair on the Square, which provides the community with resources and information about how to live more sustainably and be more environmentally friendly.

Denmark is a dual finalists in the litter action and community containers for change categories.

Horsepower Denmark’s containers for change project, Turning Bottles into Bridles and Cans into Community Strength, put the town in the running for the community containers for change award.

They also earned a spot on the finalists’ list for the litter action award thanks to Kwoorabup Nature School’s Our Beautiful Coastline project, which encourages local students to take responsibility for keeping their town litter-free.

Mt Barker has made the shortlist for the waste management award, recognised for community-led resource recovery at the local tip shop.

Albany is also the only Great Southern locality vying for the State award this year, and a win at State level could see Albany go on to represent WA at the national awards.

Williams won the WA State award in 2025 and went on to bring home the national Tidy Town honour earlier this year.
