Albany Malayalee Association celebrates its legal paperwork as reflecting unity, vision and cultural pride
Albany MLA Scott Leary was on hand to present the city’s Malayalee Association with its articles of incorporation, which is seen as a major milestone by its members.
Association president Jobison Jacob said Sunday’s presentation at the CWA Hall meant more than just legal recognition of the group which represents about 40 families whose origins are from Kerala in south India.
“This proclamation signifies more than just formal recognition — it reflects the unity, cultural pride and shared vision of the Malayalee community in Albany,” he said.
“The association aims to foster cultural heritage, strengthen community ties and create a supportive environment for its members.”
Mr Leary attended a ceremony to mark the legal process and handed over the certificate recognising the association as a formal entity.
Mr Jacob said he was grateful for Mr Leary’s attendance.
“His presence and support made this milestone even more meaningful,” he said.
“We also expressed our gratitude to all community members whose encouragement and involvement made this achievement possible.
“With this strong foundation, the Albany Malayalee Association is looking ahead with optimism, committed to building a vibrant ‘home away from home’ while celebrating its rich traditions for generations to come.”
Mr Leary said he had been delighted to attend.
“Culturally, what they bring to Albany is exactly what the city is becoming,” he said.
Those from the association who attended included vice-president Robin Kuriakose, secretary Roshan Philip and treasurer Geethu Vasanthakumari.
