Breaksea puts out the call for Albany Youth for its show Malkar ahead of its 2024 season Side by Side

It’s all hands on deck for multi-arts organisation Breaksea as it prepares for the start of its 2024 season titled Side by Side.

The season will see the debut of new shows, a tour across regional WA, and a reworking of an old favourite, all while exploring themes of inter-generational relationships within communities and finding connection, purpose, and joy through culture and kindness.

Having received funding from the city of Joondalup and been selected for CircuitWest’s Shows on the Go Program, Breaksea’s children’s show Sea Dragon will tour the State’s regions.

The show debuted last year and was devised in collaboration with students from the Great Southern as a way to allow them to express their creativity and artistic voices.

Between late April and early June, the show will tour the Wheatbelt, Goldfields, Esperance, Pilbara, South West and Great Southern.

In time for the end of NAIDOC week, Breaksea will be debuting its new show Malkar on July 12.

It will feature young local artists including Noongar artists Jarrad Inman and Rachael Colmer, as well as a newly formed mass choir that will meet over 10 weeks.

The show will explore themes of home, family, and country.

Ahead of the season’s start, Breaksea is encouraging those interested in joining the youth mass choir to register on the organisation’s website.

The Side by Side season will see the return and rework of Breaksea’s 2021 show Caretaker in collaboration with UWA Music.

Caretaker is set to hit the stage in Perth later this year, with Breaksea’s director of music, marketing, and mentorship Pia Harris telling the Advertiser she hopes some of the performers will be from the Great Southern, where the show originated.
