Extensive coastal erosion at Frenchman Bay has forced the closure of the lower carpark and picnic area by the City of Albany.

Closed last Wednesday to pedestrians and vehicles, the area is expected to be shut off from the public for the rest of the month.

City reserves manager Jacqui Freeman said recent storms had accelerated coastal erosion.

“This erosion has now undermined the carpark, signage, fencing and bollards along the site,” she said.

“The picnic area has also become unstable with high tides and wave action from recent storms.

“While it is not unusual for this area to experience erosion, recent months have seen the issue become much wider spread.”

She said the City had acted on remediation plans.

“Coir logs have been installed in the lower-lying areas to protect trees from falling into the ocean, with further plans in place for remediation at the picnic area,” she said.

“This will include terracing, coir logs and planting of native fringing vegetation. “This will be a short to medium-term solution until a coastal hazard, risk management and adaptation plan has been prepared for the area.

“We ask the public to observe the signage and avoid going to this area as it is unsafe for both pedestrian and vehicle access.”

Boat users have been told to launch their craft at Murray Road instead.
