The City of Albany’s desire to improve access to its natural attractions has earned it a runner-up spot in the Most Accessible Communities Awards.

The slot on the podium was secured by the Marine Drive accessible lookout which offers stunning views of King George Sound, Middleton Beach and out to the Torndirrup National Park.

The honours were announced at the WA Local Government Awards on June 12 with Mandurah scooping the overall prize.

The works in Albany to transform what had previously been a carpark layby were completed in late 2025, with a shelter and roof covering opening onto decking with its panoramic views.

Of the city’s 20 lookouts, five have been upgraded to improve accessibility with the Marine Drive project the latest in an ongoing program.

The city has prioritised making its lookouts as accessible as possible.

City of Albany mayor Greg Stocks said the recognition reflected the city’s focus on inclusion and liveability.

“This is a proud moment for Albany and reflects the commitment we have made to ensure our natural attractions are accessible to everyone,” he said.

“Marine Drive lookout is a place that holds deep meaning for our community, and these upgrades mean more people can now experience those views and that sense of connection, regardless of ability.

“We want everyone to be able to experience our coastline, our history and our natural beauty.”
