Lakeside Park set to be vegetated by volunteers for City of Albany’s community tree planting day

Green thumbs of all ages are being encouraged to head to McKail on Sunday for the City of Albany’s annual community tree planting day.

This year’s community tree planting day will take place at the area between Crispe Way and Drome Road at Lakeside Park and run from 10am to 12pm.

The annual event coincides with National Tree Day, where each year more than 300,000 from across the country volunteer their time to plant a new leafy friend and boost their local area’s future tree canopy.

City reserves manager Jacqui Freeman said the city hopes to provide people of all ages with the opportunity to make a lasting contribution to Albany’s natural environment.

“This year roughly 3,000 locally native seedlings, including a mix of trees, shrubs and grasses will be planted at Lakeside Park in McKail, helping to boost biodiversity, and enhance the area for wildlife and the community,” she said.

“Everyone is encouraged to come along, lend a hand and be part of this rewarding community event.”

Since being established in 1996 by Planet Ark, the national event has grown into Australia’s largest community tree planting event.

Gloves, tools and planting equipment will be provided to all volunteers, who are encouraged to bring along a friend for a few hours of environmental do-gooding.

Participants should wear long sleeves and long pants, a hat and boots.

Wet weather gear may be required depending on the forecast.

In previous years, Albany residents have helped revegetate sections of Emu Point.
