A new cinema committee has been formed for the upcoming CinefestOZ Albany festival, bringing together a range of voices from the community.

The Community Advisory Committee has been formed to shape CinefestOZ Albany as a sustainable festival, connecting the Albany community and supporting the city’s economic and cultural aims.

The Advertiser in January reported the first edition of the new film festival in Albany would take place from April 29-May 1.

The festival aims to give a new audience of film lovers a taste of what people in the South West have been enjoying for the past 13 years through CinefestOZ.

The Albany committee consists of 12 community members representing different organisations around town.

Members include CinefestOZ chief executive Malinda Nixon, Museum of the Great Southern regional manager Catherine Salmaggi, Menang Noongar elder Vernice Gillies, and the City of Albany’s Simone Klose.

“The committee brings a range of talents and knowledge into the one room to help develop and promote this inaugural Cinefest OZ Albany film festival,” co-ordinator Annette Davis said.

“The committee includes people with business and tourism experience and knowledge along with creative people, all who love film and love Albany and can see the benefits that the film festival will bring.”

CinefestOZ chief executive Malinda Nixon said anticipation was building ahead of their inaugural Great Southern event.

“We are very pleased that people have leapt at the opportunity to be part of the journey towards holding this years first festival in Albany,” she said.

“Partnerships and collaborations are central to the success of this community event.”
