Take ownership and keep favourite spots clean with Adopt a Spot

If you care about a certain area in Albany — whether it is your street, local park or a place that you like to walk — the Adopt a Spot program can help you keep it clean.

The Keep Albany Beautiful program offers adoption certificates and free cleaning resources to help residents keep their favourite spots litter-free.

Adopters are asked to regularly pick up rubbish in their chosen spot, a simple task which KAB president Lynley Harrison said could make a big difference to the environment and community.

“By taking ownership of an area it will give you pride in keeping that area free of litter and protecting our native animals of dangerous micro-plastics and general litter,” she said.

Albany resident Emma Mitchell and her daughter Samantha, 5, have joined the program after looking after their area independently for two years.

Adopting a spot where they walk in Mt Melville, Ms Mitchell said they collected rubbish on their route from home.

“It all started when we got our dog Lucy about two years ago and we would walk Lucy around the block for a walk,” she said.

“After seeing all the litter, the following day, my daughter Samantha insisted that we take a bag to pick up all the rubbish.

“On our first walk doing this Samantha filled two bags with litter.

“The amount we find on recent walks has drastically reduced and I believe this is due to my daughter’s passion to protect the environment.”

Ms Harrison said anyone could sign up to the program, as an individual or a group.

She urged people to register online to receive a start-up kit containing gloves, bags, tongs, a sharp container and a hi-vis vest.
