A fine time in the vines

Punters and residents alike can get up close and personal with some of the region’s leading producers next month. As part of the Fine Vines festival, a self-guided tour of the region’s vineyards runs on October 16 and 17. Event co-ordinators Erin Molloy and Brianna Delaporte said the Open Vineyards tours take in 12 producers, many of whom normally weren’t open to the public. “Get to understand the wine-making process, talk to the makers, and buy bottles from the hard-to-access, but highly desirable Margaret River region wineries,” promoters said. “With twelve epic vineyards to choose from over the two days, we understand that you might not know where to start.” The tour includes an online guide at finevinesfestival.com.au. Wineries range from Yallingup’s Brash Vineyard to St John’s Wine in Yelverton and Rosa Brook’s Calneggia Family Vineyards. Also taking part are producers Jamie and Lara McCall from Burnside Organic Farm. Mrs McCall said the weekend tours were a great chance for the family-run business to engage directly with customers. “We will have wine-focused tours, Pet Nat tastings, and back vintages of Zinfandel available,” she said. After the tastings, visitors would go on a one-hour tour of the couple’s working farm, including organic vegetable gardens. “You will be inspired to grow your own food, learn about organic and biodynamic farming, and taste quality wine and capers,” Mrs McCall said. “Burnside Organic Farm’s vision ... lies in encouraging others to produce their own food and in sharing ideas about resilience for future living.” Permaculture, regenerative farming and discussion about the biodynamic certification process would all be on offer for the day.
