Scores of residents put themselves to the test in the Eagle Bay Epic Adventure Race across Cape Naturaliste at the weekend.

While the top athletes performing at the third annual event took out the top prizes, more than 1500 people got involved in the four-part course involving mountain bikes, trail running, kayaks and a 2km ocean swim.

Previous winners Phip Hughes and Ben Allen took out the women and men’s divisions.

The Eagle Bay Epic was modelled on the now-defunct Augusta Adventure Race also run by Rapid Ascent.

Event director John Jacoby said he remained impressed by the athletes’ performances.

“Tackling this formidable course through one of nature’s wonderlands, it is a mighty accomplishment for any athlete to tick this one off and we congratulate all who succeeded,” he said.

The Naturaliste Short Course on Saturday proved its popularity once again with strong participation.

The course includes a 13km mountain bike, 1.2km ocean swim, 5km paddle and 7.9km trail run and was won by Brant Edwards and Katherine Ross in the solo male and female categories, posting times of 2:21:37 and 2:43:45.

The Kids Adventure challenge on Saturday afternoon saw 300 youngsters tackle the 3.5km running and obstacle course, complete with spiders’ webs, hay-bale jumping, hurdles, crawling challenges, and slippery dip obstacles along the way.

WA’s “wife carrying” championship was also held, with the winning couple taking home their weight in Eagle Bay Brewing Co. beer.

The Eagle Bay Epic is slated to return in 2023.
