The region’s rebranded Little Athletics organisation is calling for members as the club reports fantastic growth ahead of summer.

Formerly known as the Margaret River Little Athletics Club, the parent-run sporting group has moved to Cowaramup’s town oval and taken on the new moniker Capes Athletics Club.

The refreshed club had its first fun-filled try-out day at its new home base last fortnight, encouraging new participants to get involved before the busy summer season ramped up.

The club already had 60 members, and inaugural president Caitlin Williams said the committee was overwhelmed with support and enthusiasm from families in its first season.

“It’s so encouraging to know that there are so many families in the South West who value having Capes Athletics Club available to them,” she said.

“We can’t wait to see these young athletes setting new PBs for themselves, making new friends and cheering each other on.”

Ms Williams welcomed youngsters of all abilities to the club’s new permanent base, with meetings held on Sundays from 8am-11am and optional one-hour training sessions on Tuesdays from 4pm.

The recent try-out day brought new members into the fold.

The junior athletes were given the chance to rotate between various stations, trying their hands at high jump, shot put, hurdles, long jump, and discus throw.

Parent Carmen Moore had already signed her son Sandon up before the try-out day.

“(It is) such a great day for the kids,” she said.

“Everyone really got involved and the teachers were great in showing the techniques.

“I think it’ll be a great season. The kids are also learning the spirit of teamwork and getting in there and having a go.”

Organisers said the attending crowd was “buzzing with excitement” at the prospect of the new club being a regular fixture on Sunday mornings in Cowaramup.

They also thanked the Lions Club of Cowaramup for sponsored uniforms, with the backing of the Margaret River Lions and the Cowaramup CWA.
