Capes crew dominate Point

Capes surfers dominated the King of the Point surf competition last weekend, with surfers from Margaret River, Gracetown, Yallingup and Dunsborough placing in each division.

The 39th annual competition ran last Saturday and Sunday at Trigg Point, where small and clean conditions offered surfers a great opportunity to showcase their skills.

Margaret River’s Jano Belo claimed a back-to-back victory, winning the blue-ribbon event for the second successive year with a score of 13.60.

Fellow Margaret River surfer Luke Campbell was less than a point behind and was runner-up champion with a score of 12.67.

Belo said he was blessed to have family and friends at the event.

“Luke and I are good friends and we used to compete on the World Qualifying Series together, so to be in the final with him was a special moment,” he said.

Dunsborough’s Holly Thomas shone in the Queen of the Point division, proving she was a force to be reckoned with against three well-known WA surfers.

Thomas placed first with a score of 15 and was closely trailed by Carnarvon’s Coral Durant, Mandurah’s April McPherson and Taiana Duncan from Kalbarri.

The South West boys proved they were stars of their division, with Margaret River’s Jed Mattinson, Yallingup’s Jack Thomas and Gracetown’s Ben Gradison placing first, second and third respectively in the under-21 Prince of the Point round.

Mattinson said he was “stoked” to win a competition in Perth. “I usually struggle on the waves in Perth, but to have priority and some really nice-shaped waves on offer I couldn’t be happier,” he said. “This win is a good confidence boost.”

The Lord of the Point division was taken out by Scarborough’s Luke Saranah but Yallingup’s Tommy Trigwell placed third in the over-30s division.
