Driving across Australia would be a difficult task for many, but Margaret River local Tom Roberts is set to do it next week — and in a “shitbox” of a car.

Alongside teammate, Rory Stewart, Mr Roberts will set off from Perth next week, spending 10 days driving across Australia in the Shitbox Rally.

The rally raises money for the Cancer Council, with each team required to raise a minimum amount for the cause, as well as only spend $1000 on the car they will be driving across the country.

With both of their fathers having battled cancer, Mr Roberts and Mr Stewart have wanted to do the rally for years, and were accepted into next week’s event after being on the waiting list.

“It’s a really great cause and is so close to both of our hearts,” Mr Roberts said.

Their team — Stevie Wonder’s Race Team will transform the car in the next few days, with a piano and other musical related items to be painted onto the car.

The 1978 Diesel Mercedes was bought in Geraldton, and needed minimal repairs to get it ready.

Their sponsors include City Discount Tyres, Cycles Mandurah and Matrix Towing.

With 250 cars competing in the rally and auctioned at its conclusion, the event has been able to raise more than $18 million for the Cancer Council over nine years.
