Dunsborough-based charger Maverick Wilson has scored a fresh honour in his young career, coming runner-up in the final at the Rip Curl Gromsearch in Victoria.

The east coast competition brought weak conditions for the St Mary Mackillop Catholic College student compared with the zesty surf on home territory.

Wilson went up against Anna Bay’s Jimmi Hill in the under-16s boys’ final, coming aching close to the win.

But Hill bested Wilson 14.33 to 11.67 out of 20 in the final.

Hill came through under pressure with a range of powerful hacks and carves which earned him the win.

The finals contest played out in middling 2-3ft surf welcomed by competitors after flat conditions on the first day of the two-day event.

For the girls’ under-16 final, Lani Cairncross from Kiama Downs won with 12.84 against Currumbin’s Charli Hately on 12.37.
