Margaret River’s Jack Haslau and Dunsborough’s Ian Ainsworth have come away with State championship titles from the final event of the WA Pro Am Series in Geraldton at the weekend.

Haslau’s precision earned him the Open Men’s and Under-21 Pro Junior State Championship titles at the event held at at Flat Rocks along the Batavia Coast.

His clean manoeuvres and powerful backhand turns earned the 17-year-old a two-wave combined total of 16.54 in the Men’s Open, with Cottesloe’s Jake Edwards close behind in second place with a score of 15.90.

Sorrento’s Pascal Hutchinson won the hotly contested Under-21 Pro Junior division with impressive on-rail surfing, scoring a combined 16.76.

Haslau placed second on 15.70, followed by fellow Margaret River surfer Cyrus Cox in third place with 13.44.

Other commendable surfers from the Capes Region include Augusta’s Brett Hardy, who placed second in the Over-35 Master Men’s division, and Margaret River’s Martin Cox who placed second in the Over-40 Senior Master Men’s.

Ainsworth went neck-and-neck with Margaret River’s Brad Cowan in both the Over-45 Grand Master Men and Over-50s Legend Men’s divisions.

Ainsworth placed second to City Beach’s Paul Patterson in the Over-45s, with Cowan in third.

Ainsworth took the top spot in the Over-50s, earning him a State championship title, with Cowan closely behind in second place.

Haslau and Ainsworth will join seven other surfers to represent WA at the Australian Surf Festival in Tweed Heads, NSW in August.
