A random Margaret River police patrol in Cowaramup on Monday night was in the right place at the right time.

Margaret River officer-in-charge Luke Fowler said arson was suspected after officers came across grass fires at a popular location for speed cameras on Bussell Highway.

Sgt Fowler said there was no solid evidence the fires were started to thwart future camera operations, but an investigation was under way.

“We came across the fire whilst on patrol around 10.30pm and called the vollies from Cowaramup to attend,” he said. “There’s speculation the grass trees were targeted due to the placement of the speed camera in that location.

“As always, the volunteers were fantastic — quick to the task and had the grass trees extinguished without anything else catching fire.”
