Football Margaret River comes home with SWSA premier league titles for both men’s and women’s sides

A small South West soccer club is celebrating after taking home both of the region’s premier league titles.
Football Margaret River on Sunday took home the trophies in both the men’s and women’s competitions, a result club president Paul Brown described as amazing.
“We established the club in 1986 and since then, we’ve won some minor trophies but we have never been anywhere near the Premier League trophies,” he said.
“So to win, both male and female division is a testimony to everybody involved with the club, because we’ve worked really hard, especially over the last five years.”
The women’s started the day of celebration with a thrashing 7-0 win over Bunbury United, before the men’s also defeated United later in the day with a 2-0 victory.
Brown noted the significance of the achievement.
“The real big heavyweights in Bunbury have just monopolised it for the last 20 to 30 years, so it’s taken a lot of hard work, and especially at grassroots level,” he said.
“We’ve got training centers and we try and bring our juniors through that - they train with the seniors at a certain age group to get used to that type of thing.”
The club could cap off their great year on the weekend, with both teams playing in the South West Cup finals at home.
Brown said the teams would not be taking anything lightly heading into their games.
“They play really good, fast, attractive football, so we’re hoping that it goes over the line on Sunday,” he said.
“It’s going to be pretty exciting.”
The premier women’s competition kicks off on Sunday at 12.30pm, before the premier men’s begins at 2.30pm.
