Football Margaret River snares double victory to seal 2024 soccer season
Football Margaret River achieved a titles double in the South West Cup at Hay Park on Sunday, winning both the men’s and women’s league deciders.
The men’s team trailed Hay Park for much of the game, but were able to stack on three quick goals to run out 3-1 winners, while their women’s side edged out Dunsborough Town in a slow burning 1-0 game.
FMR’s Connor Thurston won the Ron Moss Medal as the best player in the men’s final, while the Yvonne Jones Medal for the best player in the women’s final was claimed by FMR’s Nazire Reid.
The women’s reserves final was full of excitement, with Australind and FMR knotted at 4-4 after regulation time and extra-time before Australind went on to win 4-2 on penalties.
FMR president Paul Brown said members were thrilled with the outcome amid a stellar season for the sport.
“FMR are very proud of everyone involved with the club in what has been a record breaking season on all levels,” he said.
“We registered 26 junior teams in the LNJSA, and also fielded two men’s and women’s teams and a master’s team in the SWSA.
“On Sunday the premier men and women’s teams added another trophy to the league trophies they have won this season,” Brown said.
“The women reserves team got beat on a penalty shootout.
“Add to this the men’s reserves team won the first league title to cap off a memorable year.”
In the other men’s finals, Dalyellup Park Rangers beat Bunbury United 6-0 in the reserves and Eaton Dardanup defeated Collie Power 2-0 in the division one.
Brown thanked sponsors, supporters, volunteers, coaches and players for their efforts during the season.
