Margaret River Pro means conservation work for surfing athletes

Pro surfers have teamed up with Nature Conservation Margaret River Region and residents to undertake coastal planting as part of the World Surf League’s commitment to its latest stop on the Championship Tour. Famed athletes including Kanoa Igarashi, Bettylou Sakura Johnson, Conner Coffin, and Lakey Peterson got involved at the weekend, working alongside volunteers and members of the Margaret River Coastal Residents Association and Cowaramup Bay Boardriders Club in dunes near Gas Bay. Nature Conservation general manager Drew Mckenzie said the project was great for residents as well as caring for the region’s coastline. “This area has some really high-quality surfing breaks, but it’s under pressure from its popularity with surfers, swimmers, fishers and beach walkers,” he said. “We’re really excited to get in there to start rehabilitating and protecting the site. “Our message is that every one of us can make a difference,” Mr Mckenzie said. “By taking part in this busy bee, the surfers are showing a really local, practical and hands-on way for everyone living in or visiting the Margaret River region to take meaningful action. “Change doesn’t come from one person trying to do everything, but when everybody does their little bit to protect this very special part of the world.” Lakey Peterson said community-led efforts like those at the weekend were a great way for surfers to give back to the places that hosted them. “No matter where you are in the world, there are always local charities or groups that are trying to help out,” she said. “Wherever you are, there’s always something you can do to give back.” Her colleague Johnson said the weekend efforts were rewarding. “Giving back to communities in general is such a good thing,” she said. “There are always ways we can help to preserve these ecosystems and inspire future generations to hopefully do the same.” Mr McKenzie said Nature Conservation was only one of the organisations working to protect and restore local coastal ecosystems, with the work supported by philanthropic group Line In The Sand operated by entrepreneur Howard Cearns.
