Margaret River Tennis Club is set to celebrate a major anniversary this month — though members are debating exactly how many years it has been.

The club has moved several times in its lifetime, including during the settlement’s early period.

Club president Carl Sanderson said the club was revived in 1938 based near what is today the Margaret River Youth Precinct.

But early competitions were thwarted by the realities of life on the land and competitions with neighbouring Busselton teams sometimes couldn’t come to fruition due to the state of the roads.

Mr Sanderson said at one point the club even recruited nearby stationed military personnel to make up numbers.

Today’s club was established near Nippers Oval in 1994.

But club secretary Mary Cameron said the club would be celebrating its 60th anniversary because that was when continuous records records.

“This year marks a significant milestone for the Margaret River Tennis Club,” she told the Times.

“It has been 60 years since the tennis club was founded in 1964 and 30 years in the current clubhouse.”

To celebrate the occasion, the club will hold a gala celebration on Saturday, April 20.

Ms Cameron urged all members past and present to get involved.

As well as the celebration, members are expected to gather to swap stories from the past and enjoy a few social drinks.
