Neo-soul diva set for Settlers
Feminism has a quirky and playful new face in Perth neo-soul diva Your Girl Pho.
Touring Australia promoting her latest single release Don’t Wanna, the electronic rhythm and blues queen will perform with her experimental band at Settlers Tavern tonight.
Don’t Wanna has an exaggerated female chant in the chorus which promotes independence and power.
“I wrote the song about our crazy echo chamber that is technological and online protest,” she said.
“I was questioning whether some people really believe in the ideals of feminism or whether it’s just a pop culture call-out.
“Sometimes people get slightly carried away with social media.
“At the end of the day we’re all fighting for equality and we need to work together.”
This collaboration can be seen in many of Pho’s most popular tracks including Manipulate featuring Perth rapper Chiseko and produced by JCAL.
The track was born when she and JCAL were working together under the band name Phocal, but after a re-work and inviting Chiseko to add a verse, the song transformed into a “classic heartbreak anthem”.
“Sometimes after a break-up you remove those rose-coloured glasses and ask yourself ‘how did I get here?’ ... that sudden realisation that your partner has lied to you,” she said.
Pho said the Settlers environment was exciting and somewhat daunting after her last experience when several patrons heckled her experimental style, with some comedic between-song banter.
“It was quite a thrilling experience, the lights were so bright and the room was packed so I didn’t know where the comments were coming from but I’m not worried to joke back to any heckles,” she said.
“We’re a different-sounding band with two saxophones.
“The sound isn’t common but after speaking with people after regional shows they’re always really nice and excited to talk about different music.”
The WA Academy of Performing Arts-trained singer is developing a loyal following across the country, with her previous single Feelen creeping up the triple j Unearthed charts and receiving a positive response on Spotify and Apple music.
She will release a new four-song visual EP in early 2020.
Your Girl Pho plays Settlers Tavern tonight at 8pm.
