Red Bull Foam Wreckers crowns Taj Burrow king at Margaret River’s main beach

A modest turnout for last weekend’s Red Bull Foam Wreckers didn’t stop a bunch of locals winning prizes and having fun in perfect conditions at the Rivermouth. The much-touted soft board “anti-contest” was presided over by celebrity surfers Taj Burrow and Felicity Palmateer, with about 50 people taking part. Unsurprisingly, Burrow took out the contest. which emphasised fun and epic wipeouts rather than technical precision. Gracetown’s Sol Pogue-Englert came in second, followed by Yallingup pair Jack Thomas and Felix Leaver, with Trigg’s Anthony Spencer and Margies local Jerome Forrest coming in fifth and sixth. Surfing WA events manager Justin Majeks lauded the contest as “the funnest surf series ever”. “Red Bull Foam Wreckers bounced down yesterday and soft-tops, sunshine, sand and surf were the order of the day at this event that breaks all the rules,” he said. Each heat started with contestants spinning the Wheel of Shred to determine which soft board they would ride. Paddling out with five other surfers, all on different soft boards, the heat was on to claim a spot as the most unique soft board surfer of the day. Foam Wreckers continues at Manly, NSW and Queensland’s Gold Coast in February.
