Crafty residents are encouraged to get involved in a community project aimed to celebrate resilience during the pandemic.

Arts Margaret River and the Margaret River Community Centre will incorporate fabrics submitted by residents into their community quilt project, which is due to feature in an exhibition later this year. The finished quilt will be auctioned off or donated to a worthy cause.

“As more people were turning to art and craft to occupy their time, we thought that it would be great if local individuals could work on the same activity,” Arts Margaret River marketing manager Stephanie Kreutzer said.

Home quilters will be asked to produce a 15cm by 15cm panel to feature in the finished project.

When developing their submissions crafters will need to answer the question: What makes our community and region special?

Submissions, just one entry per person, may be sewn, painted, knitted, crocheted or fashioned in various forms.

Co-ordinator Jo Jennings will fashion the finished quilt ahead of the October exhibition.

“Quilting is my passion, so I was delighted to find out about this community project,” she said.

“We have such creative and talented people living in our region and I hope lots of them get involved and that the final quilt tells some wonderful stories.”

Ms Kreutzer said the team included a variety of styles, media and fabrics, and she hoped many residents would take part in the storytelling project overall.

“(We) hope that a variety of people will participate and that the quilt will tell a unique story,” she said. Panels can be be submitted to the Arts Margaret River office on Tunbridge Street by September 30.
