Shire of Augusta-Margaret River honours John Alferink, youth volunteers Joshua Yates and Tom Gorta

The shire’s top volunteers were recognised at a Shire of Augusta-Margaret River ceremony.
Veteran volunteer and firefighter John Alferink scored the top award, while the youth volunteer of the year honour was split between Tom Gorta and Joshua Yates.
Mr Alferink has racked up 55 years as a firefighter, but is involved in a wide range of other local volunteer groups including the Margaret River and Districts Historical Society, Margaret River Agricultural Society, and the local Lions.
In naming the veteran for the award, Shire president Julia Meldrum said Mr Alferink’s long, peerless service to the community demonstrated commitment that was a “true inspiration to others”.
Cr Meldrum thanked the sponsors of the awards as well as the scores of residents who regularly gave up their time for the common good.
The youth award was split because of equal recognition for Mr Yates and Mr Gorta.
Mr Yates was recognised for a depth of experience in the local State Emergency Service despite his youth, as well as his service as a volunteer firefighter and football referee.
Mr Gorta was hailed as a long-term member and “integral part” of the Margaret River Hockey Club as a player, coach and umpire.
His mentoring of other players and help with fundraising was considered as a vital contribution.
Certificates of appreciation were also awarded to Cristine Wilder, Diana Heaford, John O’Dwyer, Loris Park, Luke Johnston and Petrina Yates in recognition of hundreds of hours of volunteering each year.
The December 5 celebration at the Margaret River Heart coincided with International Volunteer Day.
