Augusta-Margaret River’s winless start to the South West Football League season continued with a 65-point loss to South Bunbury at Hands Oval on Saturday. The 16.10 (106) to 6.5 (41) defeat at the hands of the Tigers sees the Hawks sink to ninth on the competition’s ladder, ahead of Harvey Bulls and Collie — who are also winless — on percentage. A competitive first half saw the Hawks head into the main break trailing by 18 points but six second-half goals from Jace Cormack broke the game open for the visitors, fuelling a run of nine goals to two across the third and fourth quarters. Despite the defeat, Matt Vardanega booted three goals for the Hawks, who were also well served by Kieran Yakas, Steven Payne, Mitchell Ellis, Max Spyvee and Jake Rodgers. The Hawks’ next assignment will come at Gloucester Park against Eaton on Sunday, with the game getting underway at 2.10pm.
