NAIDOC Week 2018 will celebrate the invaluable contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women to their families and country, and Margaret River residents are invited to get involved in all local activities.

Celebrating this year’s theme, Because of Her, We Can, the Undalup Association will run the Act-Belong-Commit Makuru NAIDOC Week Festival from this Sunday until Saturday, July 14.

Undalup chairman Zac Webb said his family would pay special tribute to his grandmother Vilma, who died a few years ago.

“Next week is a celebration of our culture and of our people, but in particular women and all women in general,” Mr Webb said.

“We’re carrying on my grandmother’s work to educate, teach and nurture our culture into the future.”

While most of the association’s events would be held in Busselton, Mr Webb said Margaret River was a special part of the Wadandi country and a focal point in reflecting on Aboriginal culture in the coming week.

“This country gave birth to us, just as the women gave life to us, and just like bloodlines, the river feeds us and gives us life,” he said.

“We invite everyone from the communities to get involved.”

“This is a time to pass cultural knowledge onto the next generation as we all come together.”
