Capes region cat owners learn how to make outdoor enclosures for feline friends at GeoCatch catio workshop

Cat owners is the Capes region have had the chance to learn to how to let their feline friends get a breath of fresh air without hurting native wildlife. GeoCatch recently held a DIY catio building workshop at Margaret River Mitre 10, which also covered the maintenance of the outdoor structures. Cat owners were guided through the process of building a catio by The Forever Project sustainability expert Chris Ferreira and Eco Builder Matty Noakes, while cat behaviouralist Dr Heather Crawford explained to how to keep them content in an enclosed space. “Cats can live happy, healthy lives in catios, provided its design provides mental and physical enrichment,” she said. The workshop demonstrated to attendees how the enclosures can be built on a budget, while professional installers showcased elaborate designs with tunnels and climbing elements to keep cats entertained. GeoCatch project officer Nicole Lincoln noted how catios can provide cat owners with peace of mind by preventing injuries to both themselves and native welfare. “It’s a win-win for wildlife, cats, and pet owners,” she said. Those building a DIY catio or using a contractors are able to claim a $200 rebate in the City of Busselton and the Shires of Augusta-Margaret River, Capel and Donnybrook-Balingup.
