Fortescue Metals Group launches direct flights from Busselton Margaret River Airport for FIFO workers

South West FIFO workers will have an easier trek to work, as Fortescue Metals Group celebrates its inaugural flight from Busselton. Yesterday’s charter flight from Busselton Margaret River Airport to FMG’s Eliwana and Solomon mine sites was the first weekly flight in a 12-month trial between the two regions for fly-in, fly-out workers. The trial is the latest in the mining giant’s efforts to manage worker fatigue by reducing the need for travel between Perth and the South West. FMG chief executive Elizabeth Gaines said the safety and wellbeing of staff was it company’s highest priority, which the new service will aim to assist with. “As part of our ongoing commitment to regional FIFO workforces, Fortescue is extending our flight network to Busselton to support our team members... with more flexibility and family friendly options,” she said. “In line with our commitment to ensuring regional communities benefit from our growth and development, we are confident this service will provide significant economic benefits and offer new job opportunities for people living in Busselton and surrounding towns.” With more than 460 workers based in the South West, the region is FMG’s second largest regional FIFO hub after the Pilbara. City of Busselton mayor Grant Henley said the new rtrial and other mining charter flights was not only a benefit for locals lives but the entire regions economy. “The City welcome Fortescue to the Busselton Margaret River Airport and the support of the resource sector for local resident,” he said. “FIFO operations continue to bring essential revenue into the airport during COVID times, supporting both the local and State economy and ensuring jobs for South West people.”
