Margaret River surfing podcast a swell idea

Three local surf heads have been left gobsmacked in recent months after a podcast they put together just for fun continues to generate popularity across the country. Created two years ago by Andrew Bromley, Tyron Youlden and Adam Kennedy, Barrelled Surf Podcast rakes in about 5000 streams a week. In its short life the three men have managed to score exclusive chats with pro surfers at a variety of competitions around the Margaret River region and Mr Bromley said he was surprised by how popular the podcast had become. “It came about because I like listening to surfing podcasts and there just didn’t seem to be enough of them and you would have to wait too long for the next one,” Mr Bromley said. Releasing an episode every fortnight, pro surfers like Jake Paterson and Bronte Macaulay have spoken on the podcast as well as World Surf League judge Mick Plowman. The three men have covered events such as the Margaret River Classic, and Yallingup Shred Fest and Mr Bromley said chatting with the surfers at the recent Margaret River Pro had been a highlight. “It was amazing, we didn’t have any passes,” Mr Bromley said. “We just went down there and found a spot and grabbed pro surfers and world champs and had a chat with them.” Mr Bromley said the podcast was receiving more and more listens every day and the trio enjoyed getting together for each episode. “People are talking about it in the surf and on land and we get lots of emails from people who enjoy listening,” he said. Besides a general chinwag, the men aim to give recognition to up-and-coming surfers in the area and touch on important issues within the Capes community.
