South West surfers dominate in glorious Gas Bay conditions for WA Surf Masters Championships

South West surfers dominated in glorious conditions at Gas Bay as Margaret River hosted the WA Surf Masters Championships last weekend. A pair of Dunsborough surfers picked up their maiden State title in both open divisions, with Maverick Wilson winning the open men and Emma Cattlin coming out on top after a thrilling final in the open women. The titles have secured the duo entry into the WA Trials, where they will compete for the chance to grab a wildcard entry into the fifth event of the WSL Championship Tour in April. Cattlin said she was delighted to be back in the South West having done much of her surfing over the past year in Perth. “It’s really nice to be able to do some deep bottom turns and hit some sections on big waves,” she said. “I’m stoked to make the trials and I’ll be doing my all to give it a proper crack this year.” Wilson said he was “over the moon” after not expecting to walk away with the win. “I saw the draw and it was stacked with WA’s best talent, so I’m stoked to get the win and the opportunity to surf in the trials is amazing,” he said. The event crowned 12 State champions, with Dunsborough locals bringing home four titles after victories for Warren Boyes (over-50 men) and Barrie McKinnon (over-65 men) also. Margaret River’s Okie Fraser (under-21 pro junior), who also made the open men’s final, and Andrew Sheridan (over-40 men, over-45 men) ensured the town was well represented on the winners list at their local event.
