Upgrade to jetty a hit with locals

Capes residents are rejoicing over next month’s scheduled upgrade to Canal Rocks jetty and boat ramp after months of lobbying resulted in the State Government “backflipping” on its original decision to close the facility.

Community pressure in the form of a petition, two rallies and many meetings has seen $1.6 million put towards an upgrade, with Advanteering Civil Engineers awarded the construction tender last week.

Shadow minister for fisheries and Member for Vasse Libby Mettam said it was great to see the “vital infrastructure project” upgraded in the interest of public safety .

“This has been a long time coming and follows the McGowan Government’s backflip on their original decision to close this boat ramp as a result of persistent community pressure,” she said.

A newly aligned boat ramp and an almost 2m-wide wheelchair- accessible jetty will be installed at the site, 4km south of Yallingup.

The new facilities are expected to be completed by late January, and will be closed throughout the construction process.

The upgrade comes as safety concerns were raised by emergency services and the public.

A Parks and Wildlife Service spokesperson said it was positive to see a WA business carrying out the works, which would generate local jobs and support the local economy.

“DBCA endeavours to use local companies and services wherever possible for civil works and other major projects,” the spokesperson said.

“Boat users will still be able to explore the South West coast, with boat ramps available at Old Dunsborough, Quindalup and Gracetown.”

Environment Minister Stephen Dawson said the boat ramp and jetty were important for recreational users and tourism operators.
