Homicide squad detectives are investigating the death of a man in Melbourne's southeast overnight.

Detectives believe the 45-year-old man knocked on the door of a home on Dandenong Road West in Frankston about 11pm on Thursday and threatened the 58-year-old woman who answered with a knife.

A fight broke out between the man and the woman's 17-year-old son, with the former stabbed in the chest.

The man died at the scene and the resident subsequently called police.

Neither the woman nor her son were physically injured during the incident. They are assisting police with their inquiries.

Detectives believe the man was known to the woman and they are not looking for anyone else in relation to the incident.
