A man's body has been recovered from a river in northwest Sydney after he disappeared underwater and was unable to be retrieved.

The man, believed to be 41, was with five other men on separate inflatable lilos when he became wedged on a large submerged rock and disappeared underwater, police say.

The incident occurred in the Colo River about 1pm on Saturday, before paramedics were winched into the location and declared the man dead.

Emergency services went to the river near Grassy Hill Trail about 7pm on Saturday but due to fading light and difficult terrain the recovery operation was suspended.

The man's body was retrieved with the aid of a rescue helicopter just before midday on Sunday.
