One fisherman is dead and another is in hospital after they were swept off rocks in Margaret River this morning.

The men were believed to be have been fishing in the Leeuwin Naturaliste National Park when a large wave came over the rocks and washed them into the sea.

Witnesses saw the men in the water about 400 metres from shore and directed a rescue helicopter to their location and a rescue swimmer entered the water.

A jet ski operated by Margaret River Marine Rescue assisted in retrieving both men from the water.

They were taken to Contos Beach, however one of the men, believed to be in his 40s, was unable to be revived.

The second man, in his 30s, was taken by ambulance to Margaret River Hospital.

A spokesperson for WA Country Health Service said the man was treated for minor injuries and discharged this afternoon.

A Bureau of Meteorology spokesman said gusty winds combined with a high swell would have created hazardous conditions in the area.

“There were significant winds this morning and the swell was quite high at about three metres,” he said.

“With the strong onshore winds it would have created dangerous conditions including a four-metre swell.”
