Confronting pictures have captured the aftermath of a country road crash that claimed the life of a man after his car slammed into a tree and burst into flames.

The photographs, taken by a passing motorist just moments after last Friday’s crash near Boddington, shows the blue Mini Coupe completely engulfed in fire as thick black smoke pours high into the sky.

Flames can be seen spreading into the roadside scrub as stunned witnesses stand back.

The fatal crash happened on George Road in Wuraming when the Mini, travelling south, left the road and collided with a tree about 1.10pm.

The male driver died at the scene.

Witness Brad Hunting said that they initially believed the plume of smoke was a bushfire before turning the corner and discovering the burning wreck.

“It must have happened just minutes before. It was freaky s**t,” he said.

Emergency services rushed to the remote location, with six Department of Fire and Emergency Services crews sent to battle the vehicle blaze and prevent it spreading further into surrounding vegetation.

St John WA was also dispatched but was later stood down.

Major crash officers have examined the scene.
