Geraldton netballer Bianca Brennan caught the eye of national selectors at the national championships, earning a spot in the Australian under-17s netball squad.

The 15-year old was the only regional athlete to have been selected in WA’s under-17s squad, who headed to Melbourne at the beginning of April to contest the national championships.

Brennan is the first female netballer in Geraldton to make any Australian squad, and joins Allen Griechen as the only other Geraldton-based netballer to be part of a national squad.

She said she was excited to hear the news and was looking to make the most of the opportunity.

“I’m just hoping to get out as many ways to improve my netball as I can from the highest (level of) coaching,” she said.

Brennan’s side had an exceptional run in the national championship group stage, going 6-1 to finish on top of the ladder heading into finals.

From there, WA fell 37-44 against South Australia in the first semifinal, sending them to the bronze medal play-off against home side Victoria.

WA lost 35-55 to Victoria, missing out on a podium position to finish fourth overall.

“That was one of the best weeks of my life,” Brennan said.

“I learnt so much. All the girls were really nice, and all the coaches really good. It was really good to experience that level of netball.”

Her exceptional performance as goal keeper throughout the tournament earned her a place in the national under-17s squad of 36, who will enter a national development camp in July.

The Mid West Academy of Sport product was one of six West Australians to be named in the squad.

Playing a game for Australia is the next goal for Brennan.

“That would be one of my dreams come true, and I would feel really proud of myself if I ever got there,” she said.

Brennan is also part of West Coast Fever’s Fever in Time development program before undergoing a rigorous trial process for the State squad, which started in June last year.
