NeuroKids expansion: Nurses specifying in youth neurological conditions coming to Geraldton and Albany

A nurse will soon be available in Geraldton to help young people experiencing neurological symptoms or conditions and their families, through the support of Telethon. Two neuro nurses will be joining NeuroKids’ Geraldton and Albany offices, with referrals now being accepted for both regions. The Geraldton-based neuro-nurse is expected to start next month. The Neurological Council of WA was a 2026 Telethon beneficiary, and as a result will be expanding its free NeuroKids paediatric neurological nursing and health navigation service into the Mid West. The NeuroKids community neurological nurses are operating in Perth and the South West, but the support from Telethon means they will be expanding to Geraldton and Albany. The specialist neuro nursing resources aim to provide neurological care close to home for regional Australians. The specially trained NeuroKids nurses will work with families to understand symptoms and conditions, provide home visits, advocate for patients in health systems, and manage medications. The program was originally designed to fill a gap in the system in which families were often dealing with lengthy waitlists and expensive treatment. NeuroKids nursing “holistic care” can benefit young people with a range of conditions, including stroke and other brain injuries, neuromuscular or neurodevelopmental disorders, epilepsy, neuropathy, headache, or functional neurological disorder. Families that have previously benefited from the program speak highly of its offerings. “From the moment you connected with us, you put all your energy into finding ways to support us,” one family member said. “This service is not a tick box, it’s genuine care. Please continue this service as regional families will continue to benefit from this service and co-ordination.” The Neurological Council of WA thanked Channel 7 Telethon Trust and its donors for making the program possible in the Mid West. Geraldton stepped up its support for Telethon last year, with St Francis Xavier Primary School raising more than $25,000 for the cause and winning the Premier’s Telethon Challenge.
