Brock Lewthwaite’s career-best form at the Kalgoorlie-Boulder Racing Club was backed by another four winners last Sunday as he challenges Peter Fernie’s stranglehold on the trainer of the year award.

Serpentine-based Lewthwaite enjoyed his best day at the track this season, underpinned by the success of Prawns Eleven ($2.15 favourite), Seeable ($2.40 favourite), Fire At Will ($5 second favourite) and Long Weekend ($1.70 favourite).

It upstaged his June 19 treble with Fire At Will, Saturnina and So Likable — the same day he just missed out on success in the $20,000 City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder Mayoral Cup (1100m) when Blazing Tycoon was edged out by Ashley Grace-trained Protected Action.

Lewthwaite has surged clear after taking a five-point lead over Fernie after the July 10 meeting.

Fernie is chasing a 15th successive title.

Natasha Faithfull rode three of Lewthwaite’s winners, with Victoria Corver aboard Fire At Will.

Corver earlier piloted Paul Roberts-trained Mulgabbie Gold ($7) to victory over 1200m.

Kyra Yuill also rode a winner last weekend, but has a big deficit to make up as the main rival to Faithfull for Jockey of the Year.

Similarly, Laqdar Romoly is the big obstacle in Corver’s bid for apprentice of the year.

The club’s next meeting on August 14 features the $30,000 Kambalda Cup.

It will be followed by the $40,000 Tattersalls Club Cup on August 21.

The traditional Race Round week was adjusted several years ago and in 2022 features the Blue Spec Drilling Boulder Cup on September 18, TABtouch Hannans Handicap on September 29 and XXXX Kalgoorlie Cup on October 1.

The Tattersalls Club Cup and Boulder Cup are broken up by the Coolgardie Cup on September 4.
