Greg Bowden notched up his 50 and 75 skeet break badge on the way to claiming top honours in the Eastern Goldfields Clay Target Club’s skeet championships last Sunday.

In the handicap event, Bowden finished ahead of Jack Saville and Sue Kamo, who claimed the final spot on the podium.

Matt De Paoli notched up the most points to claim the overall skeet high-gun and he also came first in the AA-grade.

Murray Kamo bagged top honours in the B-grade and his wife Sue claimed bragging rights in C-grade.

EGCTC committee member Marty Miles said Bowden’s continued improvement after recently returning to the sport had come off the back of tutelage from dead-eye shooter De Paoli.

De Paoli was last year crowned Goldfields Sport Star of the Year after beating a crowded field of decorated candidates.

That came after he returned to the Goldfields with the silverware in the A-grade High Over All title at the World Skeet Shooting Championship in Texas, just five years after picking up a shotgun for the first time.

Miles said interest in skeet at the club had been growing as more club members found themselves hitting targets. “Matt’s been giving a few of the guys coaching, because he’s done his coaching accreditation through the WA Clay Target Association,” he said.

“With Matt being there and helping some people and breaking some voodoos about it or miss-truths people are starting to hit more targets, so we’re getting more interest in it.”

It means a contingent of about nine from the EGCTC will be heading to Perth to compete in State skeet carnival at the West Australian Gun Club at Whiteman Park for the Labour Day long weekend starting at the end of the month.

Miles said the event attracted competitors from the Eastern States and he felt the club was poised to put in a good showing in the team events.
