Eastern Goldfields Kart Club is reviving the historic Golden Mile Challenge as part of official 30th anniversary celebrations of the West Kalgoorlie track that will run in conjunction with round five of the prestigious State Series on July 18-19.
About 120 of WA’s best drivers are expected to contest the local program, including a revamped Golden Mile Challenge that was previously raced at Boulder’s old Ted Percy circuit.
“Hosting a round of the WA State Karting Series is a fantastic opportunity for our club and for Kalgoorlie-Boulder,” club officials said.
“Competitors and their families travel from all over WA, filling local accommodation, dining at local businesses and spending the weekend in our community.
“It’s a significant event for the region, and something our volunteers work incredibly hard to deliver.
“The Golden Mile Challenge will be contested across a wide range of junior and senior classes, with competitors battling for valuable State Series championship points.
“Many of the State’s leading drivers will be competing, ensuring spectators can expect fast-paced racing, close finishes and plenty of excitement throughout the weekend.”
EGKC boasts several current State champions and State Series champions from 2025, including Ryder Scott, Connor Wroth, Riley Cassin-Roberts and Nathan Lee.
Two years ago, EGKC hosted the State Kart Championships and last year was awarded the prestigious WA Karting Rose Bowl as the highest-performing club in the WA State Championship.
And club officials said a long line of sponsors were on board to support the upcoming program.
“The response from our sponsors has been outstanding,” the club said.
“The support we’ve received from local businesses and volunteers has been incredible.
“Without them, an event of this scale simply wouldn’t be possible.
“We’re extremely grateful for everyone who has helped make this year’s Golden Mile Challenge happen.”
The opening of the Greenhill Road headquarters was made possible because of the completion of work by local volunteers and contract workers.
With most of the materials and major earthmoving equipment donated, the club avoided a final bill of more than $1 million.
EGKC celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2012, hosted the 1999 Australian championships and in 2015 the first overhaul of the racing surface since it was opened as an international-standard facility occurred at a cost of $400,000.
Its high standing has been underlined by notables who began their careers at the EGKC’s racetrack, including Michael Patrizi and Paul Williams, who went on to contest the V8 Supercars and V8 Australian Ute Series, respectively.
Former member Anthony Martin was in 2016 crowned America’s 2016 Cooper Tires USF2000 champion.
Free entry applies to the track next weekend.
