This year’s WA Day Festival celebrations in Kalgoorlie-Boulder, organised by the Museum of the Goldfields in collaboration with Celebrate WA, returns with even more family -friendly fun for everyone.

Celebrating the history and cultural diversity of Kalgoorlie-Boulder, this free event, on Monday June 1, will showcase Goldfield’s creativity and colour through interactive workshops, performances and food.

“WA Day is a highlight of the Kalgoorlie-Boulder calendar and something the Museum of the Goldfields is proud to host in collaboration with Celebrate WA,” Museum of the Goldfields Regional Manager, Kirsty Brooks said.

“The event’s success has seen us expand the event to Centennial Park enabling even more entertainment and activities for everyone.

“We encourage you all to come together and enjoy the festivities,” she said.

Hands-on activities

Attendees will have the opportunity to take part in a hands-on “Prospecting for Treasure” experience, delivered in partnership with Hannans North Tourist Mine. Visitors can learn how to pan for gold in a dedicated prospecting area and keep any treasures they uncover, creating an authentic connection to Kalgoorlie’s mining heritage.

Interactive workshops A range of interactive workshops and cultural experiences will be available, including:

  • Art workshops led by Aboriginal Artist Gavin Cumba Murray, where participants can create and take home their own artwork
  • Multicultural storytelling and craft demonstrations as part of the Living Histories program
  • Chamber of Minerals and Energy Mines Rescue Team doing emergency rescue demonstrations. This is a real highlight for our mining community.

Things to see

Diverse performances The event will feature a diverse mix of performers and community groups, including:

  • Welcome to Country and storytelling.
  • Multicultural dance and music performances showcasing local community groups, including Te Rau Hula Māori Performance Group, as well as Filipino dancing, Bhutanese, Indian and African communities, as well as Irish music by the O’Neil family.
  • Stage entertainment from both emerging and established local performers.

Living Histories program

The Living Histories storytelling tent will feature eight storytellers representing eight different cultural backgrounds, sharing personal stories, traditions and experiences that reflect the rich diversity of Kalgoorlie-Boulder.

Every year, WA Day festivals across the State organise a melting pot of cuisines, a display of the rich diversity in the region, including The Big Slice (Pizza), Chip on a Stick, Real Moroccon Cuisine, Casablanca Street Eats and Kaychola Ice Cream. If it’s the only reason you go, it’s a bloody good one—a chance to celebrate different cultures through food and drink and not worry about food for the day.

This event is made possible by Museum of the Goldfields in partnership with Celebrate WA. It highlights the people, stories and traditions that shape Kalgoorlie and the wider Goldfields community. It’s a must-do, must-see experience for the whole fam. Whether you’re trying your hand at prospecting, exploring new cultures or simply soaking up the atmosphere, WA Day in Kalgoorlie truly offers something for everyone.
