Manjimup Cricket Club hosted Pemberton at Collier Street Turf on Saturday and left with a four-wicket win.

Both teams were sitting on three wins and one loss, so a win for either team was going to put them in a strong position coming into the Christmas break.

After the toss, Manjimup sent the visitors in to bat thinking a greenish pitch would get easier to bat on later on in the day.

At the first drinks break, the game was evenly poised after some tight bowling from the Manjimup openers and some good fielding with Pemberton 2-44 after 19 overs.

Peter Bamess (33) and John Starkie (48) looked to build Pemberton to a big total, but after the dismissal of Bamess at 122, the visitors struggled to get momentum rounding out their total on 8-157 at the close of innings.

The pick of the bowlers was Jonothan Millar, who took a magnificent 5-23 off nine overs including two maidens.

The Manjimup batting innings was not off to the best start, losing opener Lachlan Smith early in the seventh over.

That brought Ben Lagana (56) to the crease, who put on a 110-run stand with Jack Muir (108) putting the home team in a commanding position at 2-125 with 20 overs to play.

The maturity and patience of the young Manjimup opener was something to behold. Although starting relatively slow, he ended up bludgeoning the Pemberton bowling attack all around the Collier Street field.

The close of the Manjimup innings saw the side finish off on 6-255, winning the match by four wickets.

Jack Muir’s century was the highlight of the day.

The warm weekend ahead sees Manjimup take on Bridgetown at Collier Street and Pemberton take on Boyup Brook in Pemberton.
