A man at the centre of a five-hour stand-off with emergency services has been charged with a slew of offences including criminal damage and being armed in a way that may cause fear.

Police say the 35-year-old from Parmelia, who had a multi-tool knife, approached the front window of the BP service station near Gilmore Avenue in Kwinana before climbing on the roof just before 3am.

It triggered a major response from police including the Tactical Response Group, plus St John Ambulance, DFES and WA Police.

Police allege the man “obstructed emergency service personnel by refusing to come down and caused damage to both the roof and DFES equipment”.

DFES deployed four firefighting crews from Hope Valley and Kwinana to assist with the response.

The man was eventually brought down shortly before 8am.

Baffled commuters took to social media to share footage of the man, who was seen walking across the roof wearing a light grey tracksuit while officers surrounded the perimeter below.

The motivation behind the incident has not been disclosed.

The 35-year-old will face Rockingham Magistrates Court on two counts of criminal damage or destruction of property, one count each for being armed in a way that may cause fear, trespass and obstructing public officers.
