Another popular swimming spot in the Shire of Augusta Margaret River has tested positive for nasty bacteria, with the shire urging swimmers to take caution.

Recent testing at the Barrett St Weir has identified elevated levels of E.Coli, a bacteria that can cause infection resulting in vomiting, diarrhoea and fever, and can develop into a severe illness.

This comes as the second swimming spot in the shire tested positive for the bacteria, with the Times last week reporting a spike at the Hardey Inlet near Turner Holiday Park.

As a result of the findings, the shire have asked swimmers to avoid the location and take care with children and pets, and avoid swallowing water when entering natural waterways.

Follow-up samples were taken on February 16, 17 and 24, with the latest results still on the way.

Shire chief executive Andrea Selvey said the tests are routine over the summer months, with updates provided via on-site signage, as well as on their website and social media platforms.
